The Binghamton Athletics Department has been considering options for consolidating
Athletics news content and social media in a centralized manner to improve accessibility
for the community.

After fielding offers from external parties, the Athletics Department ultimately decided
to keep this project in house, leveraging the skills and expertise of Binghamton University’s
I.T.S. Department. The team responsible for the successful completion of this project
consisted of Director of Innovation and Research Computing Support, Tim Cortesi, Innovation
Team Manager, Ali Kemal Tanriverdi, and Software Developer Busra Sahin.

Together, the team constructed a chrome extension that transforms user’s search engines
into a custom hub, spotlighting the latest Bearcat game schedules, scores, and news.

Upon opening a new tab, users will see a rotating list of athletic information as
well as dynamic news and social media columns for supplemental informative updates.
This extension is highly customizable, users may personalize the shortcuts that appear
on the main screen as well as switch the view to dark mode for a different aesthetic
experience.

Browser extensions are not officially compatible with mobile devices so the scope
of this project remains focused on desktop browsers.

The Binghamton I.T.S. Department looks forward to collaborating with Binghamton Athletics
in the future to enhance the Bearcat experience.

Information Technology Services (ITS) has launched a major three-year initiative to
upgrade its wireless infrastructure across the entire campus.

In today’s fast-paced, connected world, reliable and fast internet is not a luxury
but a necessity. Students, faculty, and staff at Binghamton University rely on Wi-Fi
not just for convenience, but as a critical tool for education, research, and campus
operations. Recognizing the increasing demand for higher speed and capacity, Information
Technology Services (ITS) has launched a major three-year initiative to upgrade its
wireless infrastructure across the entire campus, to be completed by Fall 2027. Upgrading
the campus infrastructure will significantly improve the overall educational environment,
providing students and faculty with the tools they need to succeed.

This is an exciting project that the Network Administration and Telecommunications
teams are undertaking to ensure the campus stays at the forefront of technology, providing
faster, more reliable Wi-Fi for all students, faculty, and staff. The completion of
this project will enhance the learning environment, support new research and innovation
efforts, improve administrative efficiency, and allow for future growth.

The Network Administration team began this project by identifying gaps in coverage
and areas with performance issues. The first phase of the project was completed during
the summer of 2024. Multiple locations were upgraded, but notably, the team enhanced
and expanded coverage in the Lecture Hall, University Union, and Library Ground areas.
Based on campus community feedback, these areas consistently experienced issues and
were prioritized for this project. Additional exciting upgrades for our campus community
include enhanced outdoor Wi-Fi in the Peace Quad, CIW Turf Field, Newing Quad Turf
Field, and Dickinson Quad Turf Field.

Looking ahead, the next phases of the project will focus on expanding coverage to
other high-traffic areas across campus, including residence halls, dining facilities,
and additional outdoor spaces. As the project progresses, ITS will continue to incorporate
feedback from the campus community to ensure that all areas benefit from improved
connectivity.

ITS is committed to fostering student success by continuously adapting to the evolving
needs of our campus community. This Wi-Fi infrastructure upgrade is just one example
of how we are listening to feedback from students, faculty, and staff to improve the
overall campus experience. By prioritizing areas of high demand and addressing performance
challenges, we are ensuring that our campus remains a hub for innovation, learning,
and collaboration. As this project progresses over the next few years, ITS will continue
to invest in technology and infrastructure that supports the academic and personal
success of our students, preparing them for the future and reinforcing our commitment
to excellence in higher education.
