Chunghwa Telecom Expands MEO Satellite Connectivity in Taiwan

Chunghwa Telecom has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with SES, a Luxembourg-based global Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) satellite operator, to establish what the companies describe as North Asia’s first second-generation O3b mPower ground station in Taiwan.

The agreement aims to significantly enhance Taiwan’s MEO satellite data transmission capacity and service performance, delivering faster, more stable, and highly resilient satellite connectivity. The project will also strengthen Taiwan’s critical communications infrastructure by ensuring that key information traffic is directly landed within the country, supporting greater network sovereignty and resilience.

Through the collaboration, SES will contribute its system deployment and operational expertise from its Satellite Innovation Centre in The Hague, the Netherlands. The partnership will showcase advanced satellite-enabled applications, including multi-orbit satellite communications integration, cloud connectivity, edge computing, Internet of Things (IoT) data analytics, and automated machine vision.

Chunghwa Telecom and SES will also jointly evaluate the establishment of a Satellite Innovation Lab in Taiwan. The proposed initiative would include demonstration sites and certification mechanisms designed to help domestic companies accelerate technology validation and product adoption. By aligning with SES’s global ecosystem, Taiwanese firms could gain access to international supply chains and commercial opportunities.

The partnership leverages Taiwan’s strengths in semiconductors and advanced manufacturing to build a collaborative hardware-and-software ecosystem, reinforcing the country’s strategic role in the global satellite and space technology sector.
