Team Leader Discusses Advances in Mobile App Development

On one hand, the rapid evolution of technology requires careful attention; on the other, certain scopes are quite well-defined within a relatively short timeframe. In this regard, the field of mobile app development is experiencing swift advancements, driven by technological innovations and the growing demands of users. 

Among the main trends and statistics shaping the industry in 2024, we can highlight Blockchain Integration, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Chatbots, Mobile Wallets, Cross-Platform Development, and Security. 

To delve into this topic, we spoke with mobile development expert Rodrigo Fontes, who is currently the Head of Mobile at Scene Health. He has led innovative mobile app development projects using React Native, Java, Kotlin, Objective-C, and Swift. The specialist discussed the paths pursued by the apps currently in use, particularly through the work of the teams he has led, with health being a major beneficiary. 

“I specialize in creating solutions that increase patient adherence to medical prescriptions and ensure the app’s continuous functionality, even offline,” Rodrigo stated. 

The journey to achieving this level of usability involves a planning management tool called OKR, which stands for Objectives and Key Results. In practice, this methodology aims to connect objectives with key results. 

“My experience includes maintaining high code quality, defining technical OKRs, and mentoring junior developers.” 

Customization and integration are key terms in evaluating the future utility of these resources, which is becoming increasingly intense. Perspectives combined with the benefits of OKRs help clarify the direction of initial plans, rather than serving merely as post-control measures offered by various tools. 

In the healthcare sector, improving the quality of patient care is a central objective supported by the use of apps. The pathway offered by technology is viewed not just as a collaboration but as the primary driver of the goals set within the OKRs. 

Rodrigo Fontes elaborated on the building of this relationship in the healthcare realm. “The evolution of mobile apps in the health sector in the coming years will focus on enhanced personalization, deeper integration with medical devices, and advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) to improve patient care. Mobile apps are becoming essential in preventive care, chronic disease management, and remote patient monitoring. The ability to provide real-time health data, seamlessly integrated into healthcare providers’ systems, will transform how patients manage their health and how doctors monitor and treat conditions.” 

According to what was described, service quality is enhanced, and users gain from this strengthened relationship with mobile technology. The expansion is expected to gain even more momentum with the evolution of AI. Preventive measures, for example, assessing the sleep quality of patients, have become plans for the near future in companies like Apple, which has announced such ideas. 

A parallel can be drawn with tools that already conduct similar analyses. Apps indicate the performance of physical activities, comparing them to ideal standards and alerting users to risks. 

“Health apps play a crucial role in the future of preventive medicine, empowering users to proactively monitor their health and take early action before conditions worsen. These apps can track daily habits like physical activity, nutrition, sleep patterns, and vital signs, helping people maintain a healthier lifestyle. By providing regular feedback, setting personalized goals, and sending reminders, health apps encourage users to adopt preventive measures that reduce the risk of developing chronic diseases like diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease. Moreover, the apps can guide users on preventive screenings or vaccinations based on their age, medical history, and risk factors.” 

The perfect outcome through the relationship between humans and machines, guided by AI, also relies on the growing learning capabilities of the technology itself. Just as with humans, it can be said that not all prevention-focused apps are born ready; they improve based on the data collected from each user. It is certain that, as they are fine-tuned, the effectiveness achieved will lead to satisfactory and relevant health outcomes for the individuals assessed. 

“By continuously learning from user data, AI can also adjust health recommendations, making them more relevant and effective for each individual. Overall, AI transforms health apps from mere monitoring tools into dynamic platforms that actively guide users toward better preventive care and health outcomes.”

Additionally, he has broad experience in health and e-commerce applications. His previous roles at Rockstar Coders and Grupo Boticário enhanced his skills in leading interdisciplinary teams, developing white-label solutions, and integrating complex systems. His well-honed approach encompasses a comprehensive strategy for mobile and web development projects, having developed skills in both front-end and back-end technologies.

Since 2015, his work in teams focused on creating and improving apps has become routine, providing him with the expertise to analyze the imminent landscape of relentless innovations. Undoubtedly, even his earlier career experiences have fueled the potential he leverages today, as the team leader recalls. 

“As part of the team responsible for the internal systems used by bank employees, I developed VBA routines to automate back-office tasks. My routine involved sitting alongside other employees, noting the steps they took in some of their daily tasks, and then developing VBA routines that automated the more mechanical parts of their work.”
